Uganda Car Rental FAQs

Uganda Car Rental FAQs;

What type of cars are available for rent?

We have a wide range of 4×4 car rentals and 2WD vehicles including compact cars, SUVs and even 4×4 vehicles suitable for safaris such as land Cruiser extended with popup roof.

Are there any extra fees that I will have to pay on top of the listed price?

No, we only share all-inclusive car rental fees on any given car or service. You get what you pay for and enjoy your ride at the price shared with the amenities shared.

What are the other costs associated with car rental in Uganda?

On top of the car rental price, you will also be responsible for paying for fuel, road toll fees, and parking fees when the car is in your hands. You will also be charged with border-crossing fees if you want to drive in more than one country and a one-time administrative fee.

What is your breakdown coverage policy?

All our vehicles are maintained to a very high level, and in the highly unlikely event of a breakdown, 4×4 Uganda Car Rental is available 24/7 to rescue you, nationwide. Wherever possible, 4×4 Uganda Car Rental will provide you with an alternative vehicle while your rental car is fixed.

Are all your vehicles automatic transmission?

Our fleet is composed of both automatic transmission cars and manual transmission car rentals; we give you what is most suitable for your self-drive safari in Uganda.

Do you operate 24 hours a day and do you take care of locally?

Yes, our team can help you at any time of the day to meet your Uganda car rental requirements. 4×4 Uganda Car Rental team will be at your service no matter the time of location whether still inquiring, in booking process or when already on a trip.

How much is a Uganda car rental per day?

You can hire our cars from $40 a day and upwards depending on the vehicle type and length of hire.  You can find a full list of the rates from our Car Fleet Page.  Different travel seasons may have different offers so please check our Car Fleet Page often for updates.

Do your vehicles have GPS?

Yes, our vehicles have GPS on request and at an extra charge. Because many cars do not come with GPS systems embedded on them already, we offer it as an extra service and we do charge for it per day or weekly depending on your preference.

Do you offer unlimited mileage?

Yes, all our car rentals come with unlimited mileage although, we recommend our travelers to always have rest time to avoid overheating and other issues related to long driving hours.

Please note, Uganda is relatively a big country; therefore, for any car hire that is below 7 days, we do limit daily mileage to 200km to avoid over speeding by clients who might want to catch time and end up increasing speed to cover a bigger distance in small time.

What do I need to pay to secure my car rental booking?

To secure your booking, 50% of the invoice must be paid at the point of booking, the rest on or before collection of the rental vehicle. If nothing is paid at the point of booking, your vehicle hire is at risk, and maybe cancelled and given to another client. So please pay 50% upfront to secure your booking!

What is the deposit amount, why do I have to pay it and when do I get it back?

All clients must provide a cash deposit before collecting a vehicle from the pick-up points. The cash deposit is required in case of damage to the vehicle during the car hire. It is not negotiable.  Cash will be returned if the vehicle is returned without issues.

Can I pay online?

All our vehicles also have all the necessary licenses, spare tire, jack and other necessities. If you encounter a problem at a road block or traffic police stop, contact the office for assistance.

What happens at Road Toll Gates?

Some highways in Uganda between cities have toll gates, which start at UGX 5,000 each. For example, the express highway between Kampala and Entebbe cities has toll gates, and therefore you should carry cash to the amount of $20,000 for paying at the toll gates. Note that toll gates in Uganda do not take bank cards, and are strictly cash.

Are you sure there are no hidden costs?

No! All our costs are available on our Car Rental website. If you are picking a car from the airport, there is no extra charge, but you need to let us know in advance. Please chat to one of our team members for more details.

What to do when I get an accident with a rental vehicle?

If you get into an accident, Contact the rental company immediately and follow their instructions and you must wait for the police to arrive. It is illegal in Uganda to leave the scene of an accident without waiting for the police.

You must call the 4×4 Uganda Car Rental office on our emergency line straight away so that we can assist you.

Our insurance is comprehensive, so if there is damage to the vehicle, it is better to allow us to fix the vehicle rather than for you not to tell us and fix it yourself.  We can negotiate better prices, thus save you money and time.

What happens if I have to cancel my booking?

You can cancel your booking at any time BEFORE the day of your hire, but you need to be aware of our cancellation policy.

Our cancellation policy is as follows:

  • 31+ days, 100% refund,
  • 16 – 30 days 75% is refunded,
  • 8 – 15 days refund of 50% of deposit,
  • 7 days refund of 25% of deposit,
  • less than 7 days no refund.

Note; we use part of your refund to pay bank charges too.

What happens if I have to return the car early?

Unfortunately, we do not offer any refunds on unused days. Once the vehicle leaves with the client, those “unused days” cannot be refunded if you decide to bring the vehicle back early.  This is normal car hire policy and is not-negotiable.

This policy only applies on daily car rentals, for weekly and monthly car rental plans, we may refund part of the money based on person to person agreement.

What is a dead leg, i.e. dropping a car in another city?

Cars may be returned to another drop-off point other than Harare, but additional charges will apply. These charges are to allow us to return the vehicle to its home location.  Ask a Zimbabwe Car Rentals team member for more details.

How much does it cost to hire a driver in Uganda?

An English-speaking professional driver/guide usually cost $40 per day upcountry or $20 – $30 town service per day. For French, Germany speakers, a professional driver guide cost USD 100 per day. 4×4 Uganda Car Rental is able to provide Drivers for your rental vehicle, if you would rather not drive yourself.

Do I have to pay for Fuel?

Fuel is NOT included in any car rental, so it is the client’s responsibility to return the vehicle with the same level of fuel they received the vehicle with.

Do I get a brand new car when I rent from you?

All cars supplied by 4×4 Uganda Car Rental are best in class SECOND HAND vehicles, and obviously not brand new, therefore we would implore our clients to have certain expectations. Small defects on the body work, or inside the vehicle are common on vehicles of this age.

However, it will not affect the comfort, safety, and reliability of our service as both our research & experience has shown us that our vehicles meet or exceed the quality that our target market drive in their daily lives.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Kampala?

The cost to rent a car in Kampala range from approximately $35 to $80 USD per day for a basic car. This price range depends on the model of car, number of days booked and extra services.
